Lady Bucks look impressively better this summer
|
Hominy Basketball fans will definitely have something to look forward to this upcoming year. The Lady Bucks look better than ever right now as they finished a four-week long summer league schedule on Monday night June 12th with an impressive record of 9 wins and only 3 losses. Which should be a sign of a successful ’06-’07 season considering the majority of the teams in the league will also be included in the Lady’s regular season schedule.
The league included the Varsity teams from Barnsdall, Copan, Hominy, Pawhuska, Prue, Shidler and Woodland. The Lady Bucks outscored their opponents by an average of 7 points per game. Offensively the girls averaged 36 points per game, while the Lady Bucks defense has really stepped up only allowing an average of 29 points per game. The Lady Bucks had several very impressive victories over the past few weeks including a 42-33 win over Class 3A Sperry on May 23rd, a 59-18 rout of the Lady Cougars of Woodland on June 1st and a 47-20 runaway of rival Pawhuska Lady Huskies.
After graduating five seniors last year, the Lady Bucks retained only one returning starter from last year’s team in Sophomore Amy Graham, who will move to point guard this season. Amy finished off the summer leading the team by scoring a total of 213 points and averaging 17.8 points, 3.3 assists, 7.8 steals and 6.4 rebounds per game. She had several strong outings including putting up 33 points, 12 steals and 8 rebounds against rival Pawhuska, plus added three Triple Doubles with 27 points, 11 steals and 10 rebounds against Woodland, against Barnsdall with 21 points, 11 steals and 10 rebounds and also in the final game of the summer against Shidler with 15 points, 10 steals and 10 rebounds. Amy’s also shot 66% from the Free-Throw line throughout the summer and has learned how to spread the opposing defense and open up the lane.
In addition the team will return one Senior (Kylee Holt) and three Juniors (Chelsea Daily, Ashley Morrow and Tory Ragsdale) who all experienced a lot of playing time over the past few years and have really improved their skills over the summer. The girls have finally learned that most games are won on the free-throw line and controlling the momentum of the game. The team is also going to be loaded with underclassmen that have a lot of potential and have all stepped up this summer to challenge the upperclassmen for a Starting position next fall including sophomores Lizzy Dunlap, Kylynn Funkhouser, Miranda Goodpaster and Tracy Volkman; along with freshman Catherine Owens and Nicole Upshaw.

In the midst of Summer League the girls played in the Jenks Basketball Camp on Friday and Saturday June 9th and 10th. Playing up against several larger schools it was all about experience, but the girls still held their ground and played tough to the end. The Lady Bucks started off camp with a tough game against the #1 Varsity Team in the State, the Class 6A Jenks Lady Trojans who went 20 and 1 last year only losing one game by 6 points in the State Championship against Mustang. The Lady Trojans retained all but one starter from last year’s squad, but the Lady Bucks kept their heads up and played hard to the end while enjoying the experience of playing against some of the top female athletes in the state. Next up the girls faced Kiefer and battled hard to the end coming up a little short in 43-25 loss. Finally on Friday afternoon they faced the powerful Junior Varsity team from Jenks. The girls never gave up and executed strong penetration to the lane winning by a final score of 34–23.
The Lady Bucks started Saturday morning off facing Class 4A Berryhill and decided to try some different offensive schemes. The girls played tough, but looked confused at times and ended up losing the game. Next up for the girls was Jenks Junior Varsity again. Again, trying some changes in plays, the girls battled hard to the end in a tough loss. The girls finished the weekend off blowing out the 8th grade team from Jenks.
Good job to all the Lady Bucks. Keep getting to the line and winning the inside battle. Thanks for giving us fans something to look forward to this upcoming season.
